While filling holes in the trunks of trees used to be the norm, current thinking is the hole does not need to be filled. If you still wish to fill it for aesthetic reasons, be careful what you use as filling. Cement can be damaging to the tree. Tree specialists have synthetic foams that can cover an unsightly hole without harming the tree.
