One big lifestyle change that occurred largely in the generations following our grandparents was the explosion of consumerism. We now buy more, eat more, and generally require more from the Earth than people a hundred years ago. The average ecological footprint (how much overall resources a person draws from the environment) of a North American doubled from 1900 to 1955, and doubled again from 1955 to 1995. Learning how to live with less would be a huge step in curbing our impact on the environment.
