What can we do to prevent red tide?

One of the contributing factors causing red tide is over nitrification of coastal waters. The nitrogen causes an explosion of the phytoplankton¬†that are responsible for the red tide. Fertilizers used in industrial farming is high in nitrogen and when farm runoff is washed out to sea this can help cause the above mentioned effect. So we can 1) reduce the use of fertilizers by employ integrated pest management techniques and 2) making sure farm runoff doesn’t get to the rivers without some purification process.
