PVC itself is made from oil, which is an nonrenewable resource. However, there are alternatives made from corn, which is a more environmentally friendly material. Some of these are designed to bidegrade quickly, which wouldn’t work well for most uses of PVC, but there are some, such as Spartech’s Rejunven8 Plus and EnviroSeal. However, the US Green Building Council has also said that PVC is not consistently worse than alternatives on a life-cycle environmental and health basis, so it may not be worth it to replace it with an alternative, which may not perform as well.
