Diamonds are the hardest substances known and thus commonly used in any cutting or grinding operations. The mineral corundum is also a very hard substance and can be used similar operations. Additionally, some manufactured substances such as carbon boron nitride, fused aluminum oxide, and silicon carbide can also be used as substitutes.
