The biggest thing that people can do is for residents of Southern Florida to be much more careful with their water use. Water run-off into the Everglades is a major problem, containing the habitat with fertilizers, shampoos, medicines flushed down the toilet, etc. The South Florida Water Management gives a list of things residents can do to try and protect the Everglades. The suggestions range from smart fertlizer use, and conscious water use and disposal, and supporting green businesses who are making an effort to act in Everglade-friendly ways.
