Researchers at Stanford have used carbon nanotubes to create sensors that can detect traces of TNT and the nerve agent Sarin in water. If similar sensors could be made to detect various other pollutants, we could better identify pollutant sources and track their movement through ecosystems and the food chain. This would allow for proactive prevention tactics, prior to people and animals being poisoned.
