As far as the Marcellus Shale itself, mostly just landscaping. However, it has been found to be an extremely abundant source of natural gas in the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania when drilled properly. It is estimate that the Marcellus Shale here contains as much as 500 trillion cubic feet of gas, which would be enough to power the entire U.S. for 20 years.
It is by no means certain that the natural gas from the Marcellus Shale (and the other newly developed shale gas plays) will be sustainable for decades. Some scientists think the wells and fields will deplete quickly, and the initial high rates of production will be tiny within about five years. Others say otherwise. Time will tell.
