What can I do with an old mattress?

This mattress is at least a couple decades old, has been through multiple owners, and in very poor condition. It’s had a long, happy life, but it’s not really worthy of being slept on anymore. I’m hoping it’s still good for something.

It’s great that you want to dispose of the mattress in a good way. Because mattresses never fully breakdown, if they end up in a general landfill, they can be harmful to the environment. But mattresses do have many recyclable components. There are some places that will recycle mattresses, so calling around to local recycling centers may be a good option. Also, if you buy a new mattress, it’s possible that the delivery company will take your old mattress and recycle it for you.

You can take your old mattress to a home furnishing store or mattress outlet where they will take your discarded mattress. However, be sure to ask the company whether they will recycle the mattress. Some places may end up throwing the mattress away anyway, so be sure to ask.

In addition, there are a few mattress recycling centers where you can have your old mattress recycled. Below is a list of a few mattress recycling centers you can call or e-mail for more information:
