At the elementary school I went to, we had a tree planting day. Of course, this probably took preparation on the part of our school–i.e. allocating space on school grounds that needed trees–but it gave the teachers an opportunity to speak about conservation, the environment, the science behind why trees are essential to the world, and was a great way to remind kids to think about the environment every time they passed by the tree their class had planted. Fond memories 🙂
Schools can also start a school-wide waste reduction program, through recycling initiatives as well as composting.
