Effective measures to limit the human population are key. Birth control, protective devices (such as condoms), and education are key. Also, political favoritism to industries such as the oil industry and nuclear industry must be reduced. The cleaner, more sensible industries, such as solar, should be on an even playing field with big oil and their Washington mouthpieces. I could probably write a novel on all of this, but these are just a few examples.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from power plants is one of the most important ways to alleviate stress on the environment. Carbon emissions are a large contributing factor to global warming, which in turn affects the environment in a number of ways. Global warming depletes the ozone layer, which makes the earth more exposed to harsh sunlight; warms the ocean temperatures, causing coral bleaching and harm to marine species; and pollutes our air and endangers our health.
Like ecoman83 said, education is also key to our impact on the environment. Educating the public about our impact on the environment provides people with tangible, plausible ways to reduce their “footprint”, such as recycling, choosing eco-friendly products, eating organic, sustainable, and local food, and reducing our energy and fuel consumption.
