California has had a long history of supporting renewable energy, 11.8$ of electrical energy came from renewable energy sources (like wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, etc.). Another 11.7% came from hydro plants.
The California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard Program was created in 2002, to set standards for our renewable energy use. The original goal was to increase renewable energy production to 20% by 2017, but it was accelerated to 2010 in 2003.
So the current energy standard now (in 2010) is 20%.
