Caithness Development specializes in power generation from environmentally friendly renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. The Caithness Shepherds Flat was created to develop, finance, construct, own and operate a wind generation facility. When it is completed, Shepherds will be the largest wind facility in Oregon.
The Caithness Shepherds Flat project was created to operate a wind power generation facility in Gilliam and Morrow counties, Oregon. It has the capacity to generate 909 MW of electricity, and is the largest wind power facilty in Oregon. Located south of the Columbia River, the facility covers 32,000 acres.
In October 2010, US Energy Secretary, Stephen Chu, announced that is has conditionally promised a $1.3billion loan to Caithness Shepherds Flat, LLC to aid in the completion of the project. Funded through offices created by the Economic Recovery Act, the loan is part of the Obama administration’s commitment to doubling the US’s renewable energy production by 2012.
When completed, the 845 megawatt, 338 turbine strong facility will be among the largest such facilities in the world. 100% of the power is expected to be sold to Southern California Edison on the terms of twenty year agreement. it is expected to create 400 construction jobs and 35 permanent jobs on-site.
