Building codes differ from state to state and even city to city. Many areas have implemented building codes to promote green building, for example in Santa Monica, California and in Frisco, Texas. These building codes focus on energy efficiency, reducing consumption and runoff. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification is awarded based on strict standards, and is an internationally recognized system.
LEED and BPI are the 2 most prominent building codes that come to mind. LEED has gotten a lot of publicity in the past few years. LEED has to do with energy efficiency, planning, design, and other decisions that affect sustainability. BPI has more to do with the construction of a building, particularly its energy and water efficiency as in how the house is wired and piped. You can read more about them at the links below.
