The Sierra Club began the Building Bridges to Outdoor program as a way to ensure that all children would have a chance to experience the outdoors. The goals of the program are to show how spending time outdoors can positively improve academic math and science performance, encourage leadership skills, earn self-respect, develop positive relationships with peers and community members, and hopefully use these skills to benefit their communities. The Sierra Club works with a number of partners, including educators, community leaders, health officials, law enforcment agencies, and outdoor recreational groups. Programs are currently established in California, Washington, New Mexico, Chicago, New York City, and Puerto Rico.
