What is “brown fat”?

Brown fat is actually fat that scientists have found in adults (previously only thought to be in rodents and new-borns) which is meant to regulate temperature. For people with high levels of brown fat, it actually can burn through excess energy – the opposite of what regular “white fat” does to most people. Brown fat is an “abnormally high concentration of dark-colored mitochondria” which burn sugar to regulate the body’s temperature.
