The giant tortoise is generally regarded as an animal that lives for a very long time, and it’s quite likely that it’s the longest living turtle. They regularly exceed a lifespan of 100 years, and there have been instances of giant tortoises living beyond 150. On the Galapagos Islands, their longevity is attributed to a habitat conducive to survival, as they “fill the niche occupied by larger vegetarian mammals in continental regions.” Basically, their competition is limited and potential predators have a difficult time penetrating their thick shell.
