    The longest lived dog was an Australian Shepherd who lived to be 29, but on average, the dog breed who lives the longest is the Afghan Hound, at 12 years.

    Actually, if you look more closely at the link, the above answer is incorrect.  The oldest dog was indeed the Australian Shepherd, but on the list that they give the longest average life is the miniature poodle at 14.8 years.  Generally, smaller dogs live longer because they have fewer health problems like joint problems.  64% of dogs are put to sleep because of health problems, so the fewer that they have, the longer they will generally live.  Also, generally dogs that are more wolflike live longer.
