According to Rxlist.com, “Botox (Botulinum Toxin Type A) is a sterile, vacuum-dried purified botulinum toxin type A, produced from fermentation of Hall strain Clostridium botulinum type A grown in a medium containing casein hydrolysate, glucose and yeast extract. It is purified from the culture solution by dialysis and a series of acid precipitations to a complex consisting of the neurotoxin, and several accessory proteins. The complex is dissolved in sterile sodium chloride solution containing Albumin Human and is sterile filtered (0.2 microns) prior to filling and vacuum-drying.”

The Clostridium Botulinum is a type of bacteria.  It releases a neurotoxin when injected, and is essentially natural when used in super diluted form.  Doctors have been using it beyond aesthetic purposes to address profuse sweating (it paralyzes the sweat glands) and for calming the detrusor muscle that causes incontinence (an overactive bladder).  Despite the benefits and advancements that come from understanding and utilizing the use of Clostridium Botulinum, I have a personal hesitance towards it because the long-term effects remain unknown.
