It seems that BMW has two main motives for supporting smart traffic lights: better fuel efficiency and less traffic congestion. These two go hand-in-hand because driving slowly and idling at stoplights reduces the fuel efficiency of vehicles and adds to the problem of traffic congestion, especially with the number of miles people travel growing at a faster rate than the country’s roadways. Dirk Kessler, department manager for BMW’s Traffic Technology and Traffic Managment group, says that an investment in smart traffic lights will end up being less than an investment in making gradual improvements to a car’s fuel economy.
