Blackle is a search engine powered by Google Custom search and created by Heap media. The concept of this search engine is that there is a fair amount of energy to be saved if the screen were to be displayed primarily in black. Even though savings would be relatively small, the collective savings if more people were to utilize this website would set an example that small actions can have positive effects on the environment.
Blackle is a search engine which was created by Google to conserve energy. The black screen requires less energy to be lit. I have been using Blackle for a couple years and find it to be a great search engine.
It is important to note that Blackle was not created by Google. As the first answer states, it was created by an Australian online services company known as Heap Media (which, coincidentally, has an all-black homepage).
According to one estimation, an all-black Google could save 750 megawatt-hours a year of energy. This estimation was the impetus for the creation of Blackle.
