What is “bird friendly” coffee?

Bird-friendly coffee is coffee that is grown in a shade farm which is under the canopy rather than in an open area. When sun-tolerant species of coffee trees became available, the rainforests were clear-cut to provide an open space for these trees to grow. Shade-tolerant coffee trees can grow under the canopy and as a result, they support the rainforest habitat, making it suitable for birds.
