Biotechnology is technology that is based on biology, agriculture, medicine, and/or food science. Now the term biotechnology is used most often to refer to genetic engineering or cell and tissue culture technologies. Typically, biotechnology encompasses procedures that modify living things to human purposes. For example, breeding programs that use artificial selection to emphasize certain characteristics is a form of biotechnology, although it is not what we would consider biotechnology.
Bioengineering, on the other hand, usually refers only to procedures and processes that require higher levels of technology and mechanics.
