Bioplastics are mostly made of corn (and other plants) rather than oil. Currently they are being used to make gift cards, food containers and cellphone casings.

The cost of making plastic from plants is 5 – 10% more, but it is worth it environmentally in the long term especially when it comes to disposal of the plastic after its use.

Making plastic out of corn is also more energy efficient It only uses 65% of the energy needed to make plastic out of oil. It also produces 68% fewer greenhouse gases and is non-toxic.
