NRDC and UNESCO provide good definitions of a biosphere reserve. A biosphere reserve is a conservation reserve created to protect the biological and cultural diversity of a region. They promote solutions to reconciling the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable economic use. Through cooperation, education, and experimentation, a public forum of scientists, governments, and organizations interact to form the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of which there are over 500 reserves in over 100 countries.
