A biodigester is an apparatus that converts organic wastes into liquid fertilizer and biogas (methane). These products can then be collected and used on crops (fertilizer) and as a heating/energy source (biogas). These devices are particularly eco-friendly because they both collect a harmful greenhouse gas (methane) and they help to prevent the diseases (i.e. e coli) that can be spread by using untreated dung as fertilizer. They are being used with success in developing nations as both a sanitation device and a cheap fuel source. The down side however, is that methane is a far less powerful fuel than propane and gasoline.
