Bio-accumulation is the term for when chemical compounds are carrying in the tissues of a living organism. They get the chemical substances from their environment or from eating something else that has the substance in its living tissue. It begins accumulate as more animals eat things that have the chemicals because the animal eating it will take the compounds and incorporate them into their living tissue. This can happen all the way up through the food web, and this is why humans should be careful about eating fish from mercury-contaminated bodies of water.
