The largest known star identified to astronomers is called VY Canis Majoris. This star is about 5,000 light years away from the Earth, and the upper range estimate for its size is about 2,100 solar radii. In other words, the radius of this star could be up to 2,100 times that of the sun in our solar system. Of course, this is only the largest known star – it is quite possible that bigger stars exist in the universe which simply have yet to be discovered.
