Whale Sharks are considered the biggest overall species in terms of length and weight not only for sharks, but the entire classification of “fish.”  They can grow to be between 40 and 65 feet in length, and weigh over 15 tons.  The second-biggest is the Basking Shark, which will grow to between 30-40 feet in length.

A recent UN-sponsored conference singled out Whale Sharks, Basking Sharks and Great White Sharks as being in “urgent need of protection.”
