Interesting question. Many businesses and Unviersities are purchasing carbon offsets in an attempt to go “carbon neutral”. In my opinion, while the purchase of carbon offsets could play an important role as part of a portfolio of actions to reduce an organization’s impact on the environment, it should not be the only one. Far more important than purchasing carbon offsets are actually reducing the amount of energy consumed and increasing the efficiency of the operation (which also in the long run will reduce the cost of running the organization/business). Ensuring that the energy that is consumed is sourced from renewable resources, when possible, is also an important strategy. Simply purchasing carbon offsets does little to actually decrease the amount of carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere through human activiites.
