The 1931 China floods were both the biggest natural disaster ever recorded and the biggest flood in human history. China’s Yellow river, Yangtze river and Huai river all flooded. It has been difficult to estimate the total loss of life, but rough estimates place the death toll at somewhere between 400,000 and 4,000,000.
Floods of incredible proportions were known to have taken place before modern times, as well. For instance, during the Ice Age the Missoula flood burst through its dam in Montana and ran through Idaho and into a large area of Washington. The flood rushed at about 20 cubic meters per second and did not stop for the better part of 2 days!
