I don’t know that there is one biggest disadvantage to biomass energy/biofuel. However, two big issues with it are the deforestation that harvesting biofuels causes and that they might actually cause more carbon emissions than they’re worth.
If materials are sustainably harvested, deforestation is not the problem. In any and all biomass, the largest issue is with Nitrous Oxide emissions and chlorine or chloride levels within the base material being used. When creating something like ethanol, this is not an issue but, if the materials are combusted it does. The chlorine level destroy the interior of the unit being used for combustion if the levels are too high and they also have the potential to create hydrochloric acid. Nitrous Oxide is a bad toxin…as many already know.
