The biggest disadvantage of earth mining of minerals is environmental damage. the earth and landscape must be torn up to extract the minerals from the earth, resulting in pollution and waste from the machines/people extracting the minerals. If left open, pit mines can fill with water and leach toxic heavy metals into the water.
Also, minerals are generally non-renewable resources, meaning that any amount of the mineral we extract now we wont have later on. As with any non renewable resource, it is a difficult process to determine the optimal rate of extraction to maximize the utility of whatever mineral you are mining.
