The Japanese Spider Crab can reach a leg span of almost 13 feet.
The Japanese Spider Crab is the largest crab and the largest arthropod. The crab has eight legs and two feeding arms that can grow up to four meters long (thirteen feet). The claws of a large male can open to three meters wide. They live on the Pacific side of Japan at depths of 150 to 800 meters, and are protected. They can live up to 100 years.
Here is a photo of a Japanese spider crab or Macrocheira kaempferi. The Japanese name of the crab translates as “tall legs crab.”
