Probably the biggest challenge to creating a high-speed rail system in the United States is coming up with the money to finance the project. Other countries including Spain, France, and China have rail systems much more advanced than ours, so we know that it can be done; however, really getting high-speed rail off the ground in the US will require substantial government investment in rail infrastructure. President Obama has already called for a strong commitment to high-speed rail from the federal government, and $8 billion from this year’s economic stimulus have already been set aside for rail projects. Making high-speed a reality, however, will require Congress to suppot continued funding for rail projects, and for state and local government leaders to help ensure that federal money devoted to rail is used effectively on the ground.
