Extreme poverty appears to be the primary cause of homelessness in India, and probably most places in the world. Migration to urban environments in the hopes of finding work often result in not being able to find steady employment. Along with the higher cost of living and the lack of support through local communities, paying for basic necessities such as water which would have been freely available in rural areas also contributes to the poverty of India’s homeless.
