The Better Cotton System is made up of inter-dependent components and the relationships between these components are supported and facilitated through the BCI membership association. Each component and relationship is equally important for the system to effectively deliver BCI’s long term objectives and goals.
Better Cotton is cotton which is grown in a more sustainable manner than conventional cotton. Better Cotton is grown according to a collection of 6 production principles defined by the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). These principles were established to ensure that Better Cotton is better for the people that produce it, better for the environment it grows in, and better for the cotton sector’s future. The vision is that eventually all cotton will be grown the Better Cotton way.
The concept of Better Cotton is accompanied by a movement, the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). The BCI is a voluntary program attempts to enable millions of farmers around the world to grow cotton in a more ecofriendly way, which is healthier for farming communities and the environment. BCI encourages better management and farming practices in cotton cultivation. There are currently 20 global groups participating, including producer organizations, trade and industry organizations, civil society, and international institutions. Adidas, Gap, H&M, ICCO, IKEA, Organic Exchange, Pesticide Action Network UK, and WWF participate in BCI.
