Many environmentalists and scientists will argue that there is no such thing as clean coal, and that the cleanest method is substitution or conservation. The problem is finding a technology that is not exorbitantly expensive. In the United States the focus is on coal gasification, which removes carbon dioxide and other pollutants before combustion. However, carbon capture and subsequent storage, most likely underground, is an integral next step, and the Department of Energy is currently funding research into this.
