If the furniture is in good condition, despite the age, it may be best to donate the furniture to a charitable organization like Goodwill or Salvation Army. These organizations can arrange for home pick-up of the furniture so that you do not have to move it. If a family member or member of the local community would like the furniture you could also give it to them. Otherwise you may set the furniture out with your weekly garbage. If the furniture item is large you may have to call your local Municipal Utilities Authority to get permission to leave it on the curb or arrange for your MUA to send someone for the unwanted furniture.
You might also consider the resourcefulness of Craigslist. If you post a Free ad on the site and leave the address of where the furniture will be, somebody will come pick it up.
If you are going to trash it, most municipalities have a Neighborhood Clean Up that is free for one appointment per year and occasionaly pick ups throughout the year.
