Putting your christmas tree in the green waste is a good way to get rid of it. The green waste companies collect them and usually turn them into mulch which is often available to their customers. Other times, they just compost it, which is still good. You can also turn it into kindling and mulch yourself. Make kindling out of the trunk and thicker stems. And chop up the rest and spread as a mulch in your yard.
Your best option is to contact your local authorities to see if they have any Christmas tree recycling options. A very common one is to have a wood chipper or compost program in which your tree could be put to use. Many municipalities also have curb-side pickup for Christmas tree recycling.
