The best way to become an installer is first join a local solar energy organization. You can find that at the American Solar Energy Society’s website here, http://www.ases.org (while you are at it join ASES as well). Then go to some informal training classes. Once you feel comfortable with solar I would suggest taking an intensive 45 hour class that NABCEP approves of to gain your Certificate of Knowledge, which will allow you to sit for the NABCEP course (the best certificate to have if you want to be a solar installer).
Also, contact local solar installers and tell them that you are interested in learning more about solar, they might need extra hands on projects. That will help you understand what exactly goes into installing solar. The first link below is a great way to start your own company.
