What is the best type of motor oil for the environment?

Both synthetic and conventional motor oil have detrimental environmental effects- conventional oil is derived from petroleum, but synthetic oil is derived from chemicals that are no better for the environment. Even so, synthetic oil, which is more expensive, ultimately lasts up to three times as long as conventional motor oil. This means you would be dumping less than 15 to 24 quarts of oil every year. Because synthetic oil is changed less frequently and overall provides more efficiency for the engine, synthetic motor oil is your best bet.
