Some of the best flowers to grow in the shade are:

    • The Bleeding Heart – it needs very little sunlight, has a rich color and a heart like shape.
    • Day lilies – need very little attention, can grow in damp or dry shady areas.
    • Monarch – pretty red color
    • Rhododendrons – a flowering shrub rather than a flower, but still nice
    • Hydrangeas – very pretty, they are the most popular shade plant.

Orchids also do very well in the shade.  For many, they come off as intimidating when actually they do very well in indoor, shady areas.

Hostas.  They do very well in the shade.  The have big green leaves and sprout cool purple/pink flowers  (they look like something out of Jurassic Park almost actually)  Trust me, you gotta plant these.

Hostas do very well in the shade, but they do not produce a showy flower. Impatiens also do very well, can grow tall, and come in a variety of colors and types. They are easy to take care of and grow well throughout the tropical and temperate areas of the Americas.
