The best thing a single human can do for the environment is EDUCATE his or her community on environmental issues.
According to Aldo Leopold, an influential early environmental author, education is key to getting people to live eco-conscious lives.
This answer can be a very subjective one. There is a gradation of beliefs. One of the more extreme thinkers I can come up with is Derrick Jensen, an environmentalist author. He has many books, two of which come to mind are A Language Older Than Words and Endgame. Especially in the former, his main thesis is that industrialized society is unsustainable. The best thing to do would be dismantling the industrialization that widens the gap between the haves and have-nots and wreaks havoc on the environment.
