As of 2009, the maximum amount of money you could get for making your home more ecologically-friendly was $1,500. There are many ways to do this, though, and the amount of money that comes back to you is a percentage of what you spent. The New York Times provides this example:
“The credits are worth 30 percent of the total cost for the upgrades. For example, if you spent $3,000 on eligible windows, you can get back $900.“
So, there really is no “best” tax break. It’s just what you can do to make your home more efficient and how much of that money you can recoup.
