The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), an independent non-profit organization based out of London, has established an impressive set of standards and regulations in order to promote the sustainability of the world’s fisheries. The MSC has developed the following three principles in assessing the sustainability of a participating fishery:
1. The condition of the fish stock(s) of the fishery
2. The impact of the fishery on the marine ecosystem
3. The fishery management system
Participation in the MSC’s program is voluntary, but the successful assessment of a fishery allows the participant to use the blue MSC “Ecolabel” in the packaging and promotion of its products.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a Seafood Watch Program that has standards that restaurants and food services companies follow to make sure they are purchasing and serving the most sustainable seafood. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch website also has a guide for consumers so that individuals can make sure they only eat sustainable seafood.
