On January 20th, 2009, President Obama made energy and the environment such a centerpiece of his inaugural speech. Prior to this address, no other presidential inaugural speech has paid so much lip service to energy. He raised issues of energy and the environment early on, as symptoms of the crisis facing America: “[A]nd each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.” President Obama’s inaugural speech also tackled climate change and nodded to America’s higher per-capita use of energy and natural resources.
