Batteries can sometimes be recycled or disposed of at waist treatment centers depending on what type they are. However, the most common types (non-reusable alkaline batteries) have to still be thrown in the trash, so avoiding using them when possible is the best way to keep them from harming the environment. Use flashlights, cameras, and household appliances that either don’t need batteries, or that use lithium ion (which are recycleable,) or nickle- cadmium, nickle metal hydride, or sealed lead acid which are all rechargeable. Rechargeable batteries still have heavy metals that are toxic to the environment however.
