There is a list of cheap eco-friendly laundry detergents here:

Notice that none of the leading brands are on the list. You may have to shop local or look harder to find environmentally friendly laundry detergents.

There is a great way to know if the product you are buying actually lives up to the EPA standards of “green”. The EPA will place a sticker on the product. This sticker means they used the least harmful of every ingredient in the product. There are too many to list, but almost at the bottom of the webpage listed below is an EPA produced list of safe laundry detergents as well as other household cleaning products. Good Luck!

The most eco-friendly detergents are free of petrochemicals and optical brighteners and are biodegradable.  Ecover, Seventh Generation, Sun & Earth all make nontoxic detergents.  Also consider the concentrated detergents (like Method) which use less packaging and less water.  Method’s new 8x concentrated detergent, “is biodegradable and is made from 95 percent natural and renewable ingredients such as coconut oil, coconut, soy and palm oils. Using drastically less water, plastic, energy and oil to produce than traditional detergent, the carbon footprint of new Method Laundry Detergent is 35 percent lower than standard 2x detergents.”
