The Toyota Prius is the most popular model of hybrid car, but there are some others that are quite good as well. The Prius gets the best combined highway/city fuel economy (around 50 mpg), which probably has a lot to do with its popularity. The Honda Civic hybrid is the next-best sedan for fuel economy (42 mpg). The new Ford Fusion can get 41 mpg in the city. These two cars might be attractive alternatives to the Prius because the conventional gas-powered Civic and Fusion are very popular, reliable cars. The Prius and the Civic have a price point of around $22K, while the Fusion costs about $5,000 more.
If you want to go a bit larger, the Ford Escape hybrid will get you the best combined fuel economy among hybrid SUVs, at around 32 mpg. The Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute are very similar versions of the Escape; they both get the same fuel economy and have the same price point, just under $30K.
Another great hybrid that is very similar in shape, size, is the Honda Insight. It is a hatchback and a little cheaper than the Prius, but it doesn’t get as good of gas mileage as the Prius (it gets around 30-35 mpg).
